2020 Grizzly Peak Century

The Grizzly Peak Century is staffed primarily by volunteer club members, but non-members are also welcome to help out. We need to fill roughly 300 volunteer positions to shop, prepare the food, move supplies, serve the riders, clean up, and more. The tables below show the complete list of volunteer opportunities before, during, and after the day of the century.

Positions Before the Century

Food Shopping - Berkeley Bowl

Contact Ron Miyaki at the original Berkeley Bowl to place our order for the food about 3 to 5 days before the century.  We meet at Berkeley Bowl - West on Saturday to verify the pallets of food match our order and to pay for the food. This whole process takes about 20 minutes between 10am and 11am.  We see that the truck gets loaded for it's trip to the storage area

Food Shopping - Costco

Be a part of the crew shopping at Costco on the Friday before the Century. You need to be available Friday morning  for the shopping trip followed by delivery of purchased items to Staging. You will use your own vehicle, preferably a station wagon, SUV, or truck to carry purchased items.

Quick Breads

Each volunteer bakes 5 quick bread loaves (non-yeast, non-kneaded) and deliver them to a designated drop point. You can use a club recipe or use your own recipe. You can be reimbursed for cost of ingredients.

Quickbread sorting

One volunteer to work with the quickbread coordinator to sort and label all of the loaves received from the bakers. Friday morning before the century 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Route Marking

Mark course directions and hazards and sweep away glass on part of the route. Takes 3-5 hours. Done in teams of two volunteers within two weeks before the Century. Flexibility is highly desirable.

Staging Location, Friday

Help organize & sort everything for the various sites. There will be lots of counting and light lifting, with help for the heavy stuff. Not heavy labor but expect to spend a physical few hours, roughly 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

T-shirt Distribution

Receive T-Shirts from printer, bag-up with instructions from pre-registration, bags go out to volunteer locations.

Transport, Storage to Staging

Load supplies at long term storage site into truck, travel to staging site, unload supplies and inventory what is there. Light lifting and help for the heavy stuff.

Truck Driving, Before

Van/Truck driving: Drive one of the rest stop supply vans or lunch truck where they're needed and help load/unload. One volunteer needed for 15' truck Friday,,2 for vans Saturday.

Truck Loading

Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to about noon. Load the truck and vans with lunch and rest stop supplies. Need two people who know how to lift carefully without tiring or injuring themselves and are good with spatial and weight reasoning.

Clean Up

Many hands make light work. Volunteers needed from 3:00 p.m. till finished (~8:00 p.m.). You can ride the century and still help out. Two from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. must be non-riders.

Lunch

Volunteers needed (~4 hr shifts) throughout the day. Activities may include truck unloading, food station set-up/take-down, food prep (veggies, fruit, chicken), and food service. Will interact with century riders. Prefer members with cheery dispositions who are able to safely wield a kitchen knife and/or serving spoon. Shifts 7:30-11:30, 9:30-1:30, 11-3, 12:30-4:30, 3:30-7:30

Parking

Help direct traffic early in the morning. (Start at 6:00 a.m.). You can help out early and still ride the century. We need to work on getting more barriers up before 6:00 a.m. for the parking lots (especially the back lot)

Registration - Campolindo

Work the registration tables. Many registrars are needed at 6:00 a.m. to keep the lines short, and a smaller number of registrars are needed all day.

7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Check-in riders who are starting from the Island rest stop in Tilden Park. Also assist with the gear drop.

Two volunteers working the early shift will also help with setting up the McEwen signs.

Meet on Monday a.m. (day after century) at our storage location at 1800 Orion St. #101 in Alameda. Move century supplies from the truck to the upstairs of storage area. Time estimate 2 hours.

Workers' Century

The Workers Century Picnic will be held Sunday, May 19 - two weeks after the Century - at Island Picnic Area. Volunteers needed to help lead rides, and prepare and serve food for both pre- and post-ride meals.
